Quantum Science MSc

New Program: Masters in Quantum Science and Technology

Overview

The M.Sc. in Quantum Science and Technology is an interdisciplinary graduate program that trains students in the physics, mathematics, and computer science underlying modern quantum technologies. The program prepares students for careers in quantum computing, quantum communications, and quantum-enabled sensing in academia, industry, and government.

Quantum technologies—including quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum sensing—are rapidly becoming strategic priorities worldwide. Governments and companies across North America and Europe are investing heavily in the development and commercialization of quantum technologies. Canada’s National Quantum Strategy and related initiatives are creating strong demand for graduates trained in quantum science and technology.

The program is offered jointly by the Carleton University Department of Physics, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and the School of Computer Science. Students develop a foundation in quantum mechanics and optics while also gaining exposure to quantum computing, cryptography, communications, and quantum materials.

Industry Experience

Ottawa hosts a growing ecosystem of quantum-related companies, government laboratories, and research institutes. With this program, students may choose to complete an optional work term (PHYS 5905), providing opportunities to gain experience in quantum technology development and related industries.

Career options for graduates include:

  • quantum computing and quantum software
  • quantum communications and networking
  • quantum cryptography and cybersecurity
  • photonics and quantum sensing

Admissions

Applicants typically hold a bachelor’s degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, or a closely related field.

The application deadline for a Fall 2026 start is July 15, 2026.
