Ottawa medical physicists win accolades at national conference

Congratulations to the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP) for a very successful conference July 12-15 right here in Ottawa, and congratulations to the Ottawa medical physicists who won awards at the conference!  Our thanks to the many members of the Local Arrangements Committee who made the conference run so smoothly.

 Four meeting awards were given to Ottawa authors:

  •  1st Place in the Young Investigators Symposium to Victor Malkov for his paper "Ion chamber quality and magnetic field conversion factors and angular dependence in magnetic fields".  Co-author: Dave Rogers.  Victor is a student in Carleton’s CAMPEP-accredited PhD program.
  •  2nd Place Poster Award to Islam El Gamal for his poster "Experimental determination of the dose rate constant for an Ir-192 HDR source".  Co-authors: Claudiu CojocaruErnesto Mainegra-HingMalcolm McEwenBrad Downton.  All authors are at NRC Measurement Science & Standards.  Islam and Ernesto completed medical physics degrees at Carleton and Claudiu completed a particle physics degree.
  •  2nd Place in the Best Oral paper competition to Dal Granville for his paper "Augmenting physicist review of pre-treatment verification measurements with machine learning".  Co-authors: Justin SutherlandDaniel La Russa. All three authors are at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre, and completed their PhD’s at Carleton.
  •  1st Place in the Best Oral paper competition to Reid Townson for his paper "The new radionuclide source model  in EGSnrc".  Co-authors: Frédéric TessierRaphael Galea.  All authors are at NRC Measurement Science & Standards.

We are grateful to the Dean of Science for providing sponsorship funds for the conference - specifically for the Young Professionals Workshop on the opening day.  Speakers in that workshop included Miller MacPhersonEmily HeathBryan MuirGraeme WardlawJoanna CyglerElsayed AliJustin Sutherland, and Rowan Thomson, all of whom (except Graeme) are or have been part of the Carleton graduate program – as students, faculty, or both!
