Public Lecture: Shining a light on cancer with biophotonics By OMPI member Dr. Sangeeta Murugkar

Friday, March 10, 2017
7:00 PM
Richcraft Hall room 2200, Carleton University

All are welcome.  No reservations required.

Abstract:  Biophotonics exploits the quantum nature of light to study its interactions with biological tissues. Advances in methods to detect and manipulate light have led to the development of optical imaging techniques for application in medicine. These imaging techniques provide both biochemical and structural information about tissues at the cellular level and therefore have the potential to offer a highly sensitive, non-invasive means for early detection and diagnosis of diseases such as cancer.

In this lecture, Prof. Sangeeta Murugkar, Assistant Professor in Physics at Carleton University and leader of the Carleton Biophotonics Research Group, will present an overview of the main optical imaging techniques used in modern medicine. She will especially focus on recent developments and future trends of biophotonics to clinical research such as the surgical guidance of cancer treatment.

Directions: Richcraft Hall is formerly known as the River Building. It's indicated as "RB" on the campus map,  http://carleton.ca/campus/map/

There is free parking for this event in the underground lot P-16 beneath Richcraft Hall.  The entrance is from the 3-way stop on University Drive just between Herzberg and Richcraft.  If this becomes full, pay parking is available on levels 2 and 3 of the multistorey garage (P9).
