Unlocking the Future of Label-Free Microscopy: An Exploration of Photon-Absorption Remote Sensing (PARS®) Imaging

Advancements in label-free optical microscopy technologies are set to significantly alter the landscape of medical diagnostics and personalized medicine, potentially signaling a fundamental shift in the biomedical imaging paradigm. Within this context, the groundbreaking optical absorption microscopy method, Photon Absorption Remote Sensing (PARS), is presented. PARS is designed to comprehensively document every absorption interaction by concurrently measuring both label-free radiative and non-radiative relaxations, offering an exhaustive portrayal of each absorption occurrence. The implications of PARS technology are further illuminated by discussing its applications within the fields of ophthalmology and histopathology.

Bio

Professor Parsin Haji Reza is an award-winning researcher and entrepreneur, best known as the inventor of Photoacoustic/Photon-Absorption Remote Sensing (PARS®) microscopy and the founder of illumiSonics Inc. He joined the University of Waterloo in 2018 and was promoted to associate professor in 2023, while also serving as a Research Chair in Biomedical Imaging. With a strong commitment to mental health, he received the Engineering Society Friend of Natalie Award during the pandemic. He's associated with the Wills Eye Hospital, one of America's top ophthalmology hospitals, and heads PhotoMedicine Labs, which has received approximately $6M in grants since 2019. Currently, Dr. Haji Reza's lab is making groundbreaking strides in real-time cancer surgical microscopes and pre-diagnostic tools for eye diseases. His work has garnered numerous awards and has the potential to revolutionize medical imaging.
