Program Statistics

The Carleton University Department of Physics has had MSc and PhD programs in medical physics since 1986. The PhD program was accredited by CAMPEP (the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs), in 2010, and was the first program accredited in Ontario. It was reaccredited effective the start of 2015 and most recently at the start of 2020.

Our alumnae include a former President of the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM), a former President of the Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists (COMP), several NIH grant holders in the US, the Chair of a major university based medical physics department in the US, 23 members of the CCPM, including 7 Fellows of the CCPM, 2 additional FCCPM, and at least 3 physicists certified by the ABR. To our knowledge, all our graduates who have attempted their CCPM or ABR exams have passed them although our graduates also work in government and industry.

As of April 2022, the medical physics program faculty comprised five full time faculty in Carleton Physics and 23 Adjunct Research Professors, plus two Distinguished Research Professors (i.e. a retired professor still active in research). The Adjunct Research Professors teach in the courses and supervise graduate students at The Ottawa Hospital (TOH), The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre (TOHCC), the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI), The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC), Health Canada, and Natural Resources Canada. The medical physics faculty include five Fellows of the CCPM, four Fellows of the COMP, four Fellows of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (FAAPM), and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC).
