Student presentation:

“EGS_Mesh: a tetrahedral mesh geometry library for EGSnrc”

Tetrahedral meshes are the most advanced type of computational phantom for radiation transport simulations. Meshes can represent thin and curved geometries using fewer elements than a similar rectilinear voxel model. A tetrahedral mesh geometry library, EGS_Mesh, has been developed for the radiation transport code EGSnrc. EGS_Mesh was originally created by Mevex, an Ottawa-based sterilization equipment manufacturer, and was donated to the National Research Council of Canada for continued development.

EGS_Mesh can simulate large and complex tetrahedral meshes including meshed CAD geometries and the recently released ICRP 145 adult reference phantoms. Ongoing verification efforts have found good agreement with equivalent voxel geometries and theoretical calculations. Preliminary results for the ICRP 145 phantoms will also be presented.

“Career pathways for medical physics graduates”

In place of an OMPI member seminar we will be hosting a special panel discussion on “career pathways for medical physics graduates”. Our panel will consist of four recent Carleton medical physics graduates who are working in industry, government, medical physics residency and post-doctoral research positions. The panelists will be:

 - Alexandra Bourgouin, Research Fellow, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), Braunschweig, Germany

 - Sarah Cuddy-Walsh, X-ray Specialist/Medical Physicist, Consumer and Clinical Radiation Protection Bureau, Health Canada, Ottawa

 - Ming Liu, Medical Physics Resident, Ottawa Hospital Cancer Center, Ottawa

 - Spencer Manwell, Software Developer/Physicist, Convergent Imaging Solutions, Ottawa The panelists will give an overview of the day-to-day activities and responsibilities of their current position; provide tips on how to find and apply for similar positions; and what the important skills are that someone seeking the same career will need. There will be an opportunity for the audience to ask questions. If you want to find out more about career opportunities after graduate studies in medical physics you should attend this event.
