News and Events

September 2025 -- Welcome to Finn and Sukhveer!

We would like to give a warm welcome to our two new graduate students. Sukhveer Singh is a new PhD student working with Bryan Muir and James Renaud, in collaboration with the NRC, investigating our biological understanding of FLASH radiotherapy. Finn Dodgson is a new MSc student who will be working with Rowan Thomson in the field of microdosimetry. We're happy to have you both here!

August 2025 -- Victoria earns her MSc

Victoria Howard has now spent 2 years working with Bryan Muir, James Renaud, and Emily Heath. Her thesis, titled "Development of a robust thermal calibration methodology for pyroelectric calorimeters", has been accepted by her committee, and she can now call herself a Master of Physics. Congrats Victoria! See the OMPI story here.

August 2025 -- Fond Farewell to Fatemeh

At our last Slurpee session of the summer, we had a going away party for Fatemeh Akbari, who is beginning her Medical Physics residency in Radiation Oncology in London at the start of September. Fatemeh has been incredibly productive during her time at Carleton, having published 5 papers in the two years she's been in the CLRP. Best of luck in your future work Fatemeh!

Great meals, great times!

July 2025 -- Bryan and Prarthana attend AAPM

The American Association of Physicists in Medicine is an annual conference,  and was held this year in Washington DC. We are incredibly proud of Dr. Bryan Muir who was this year honoured for his expertise in external beam reference dosimetry by being promoted to a Fellow of the AAPM. Congrats Bryan!

We also had a lovely poster presentation by Prarthana Pasricha about simulating GammaTile radiotherapy using egs_brachy. Go get 'em Prarthana!

July 2025 -- Rowan, Prarthana, and Steffi attend WIPC+

This year's Women+ in Physics Canada conference was held at Queen's University and Kingston.

See if you can spot Steffi Brinskelle, Rowan Thomson, and Prarthana Pasricha.

Rowan Thomson was a member of a panel of presenter's talking about EDI issues that women face in physics.

Prarthana Pasricha gave two talks

  • Dose evaluation of multiple GammaTiles in heterogeneous brain model using egs_brachy
  • Introducing MiRADS: A novel system for micron-scale analysis of energy deposition

Here she is talking about Gamma Tile radiotherapy and how they can be simulated with realistic materials.

June 2025 -- The CLRP attends COMP

This year's Canadian Organization of Medical Physicists was held in London, Ontario, and brought in researchers and practitioners from all across Canada.

Faces of COMP
See if you can find Fatemeh Akbari, Alex Demelo, Victoria Howard, Prarthana Pasricha, Dave Rogers, and Rowan Thomson. Great smiles everyone!

Rowan Thomson was one of 3 speakers part of the Strategies for Effective EDI Advocacy panel. Fatemeh gave a talk about comparing TG-43 and TG-186 formalisms when simulating prostate brachytherapy, as seen below:

Victoria and Prarthana both gave poster presentations, and Prarthana also gave a fun talk about her research as part of the Science Spoken Succintly symposium. Here she is!

May 2025 -- Slurpee Summer Series Begins

CLRP Summer Series Logo

Every summer the CLRP holds a weekly social gathering where we learn about each other on a personal and professional level. Topics will include:
- intro to group members
- what I'm working on now
- what's new in a code? what's new in data science?
- EDI in STEM
- conference presentation practice
- picnics
- your ideas here!

We've settled on Thursdays at 1pm, usually held in HP3341. See you all then!

May 2025 -- Steffi joins as new summer student

Steffi Brinskelle just finished her 1st year as a Computer Science / Mathematics double-major. She'll be working with Fatemeh analyzing dose distributions using texture analysis. Welcome Steffi!

February 2025 -- Matt joins as new postdoc

Matt Inglis-Whalen has completed his PhD in particle physics and is now joining as a new postdoctoral fellow working with Rowan Thomson. He will be researching how radiation interacts with and is transported through biological matter at energies where wave mechanics becomes important.
