Raman spectroscopy and imaging to investigate biomolecular systems

Biophotonics involves the application of optical techniques to address problems in biomedicine. The Carleton Biophotonics Research Group (CBRG) aims to develop label-free, minimally invasive optical techniques for early diagnostics and treatment, and to investigate fundamental mechanisms of disease.

We are looking for a highly motivated student to join our research team for the summer of 2019 on one of the following projects.

(1) Raman Spectroscopy for Radiation Dosimetry

Raman spectroscopy is a non-invasive optical technique that is based on the inelastic scattering of light by vibrating molecules. This project aims to develop a Raman spectroscopy based technique to detect the biochemical response of blood exposed to varying doses of ionizing radiation. The student will acquire Raman spectral data from blood cells and will analyze the data using machine learning algorithms for dose classification.

(2) Coherent Raman imaging for rapid cancer diagnostics

The goal of this project is to develop a bench-top coherent Raman imaging technique to rapidly image boundaries between healthy and cancer tissue based on their biochemical differences. The work will require spatial and temporal overlapping of two synchronized femtosecond pulsed laser beams in the same microscopic focal volume using a laserscanning microscope. The student will acquire hyperspectral coherent Raman images of healthy and cancerous cells and tissue and apply advanced statistical techniques for image analysis.
